Cornerstone Recovery make big savings

Cornerstone to recovery saves with netBin

Canadian based netBin reseller CSI have been demonstrating huge annual savings and increased productivity by using netBin fill rate monitoring with Cornerstone Recovery’s textile bins throughout Toronto

Overview

Cornerstone Recovery uses metal textile bins scattered throughout the city to allow individuals to donate clothing or other content for charity.  A pickup schedule is created on a daily basis to ensure each bin is checked for content and emptied on a regular basis.

Cornerstone Recovery uses inField Solutions scheduling software for scheduling and dispatching of field workers, optimizing the bin pickup routes, managing digital site forms and dropping collected clothing at buy sites.

“In a sample of 20 bins netBin would save a remarkable $31K per year on collection costs”

The Problem

On average a field worker was sent to a location when the bin was empty or partially filled at least 15% of the time. The fill status of a bin was only available by physical onsite observation and often wasn’t recorded and shared with administrative staff.

Cornerstone Recovery’s charity clothing bins are located throughout the city and can take up to 30 minutes in travel per location to be checked. To manually take into account the weather, location and vehicle routing and continuing to the next location takes considerable amounts of staff time.

The Solution

Cornerstone Recovery requested netBin data to be integrated into the inField platform to enable automated processes, remote visibility of bin fill levels, vehicle location, and field work status.

Working in partnership with infield Solutions further incorporation of dispatch, scheduling, work order management, fleet management (GPS) and integration with QuickBooks (for invoicing and timesheets) was included.

netBin’s API is purpose built to feed valuable data seamlessly into 3rd party applications. In this project CSI have brought together multiple solutions to ensure a successful project for all involved.

netBin’s nPod and platform provide the textile collector information on;

  • Current and historical fill level of textiles %
  • Filling rate of bin %/day
  • Forecasted overflow date
  • GPS location of the bin to initiate alerts if the bin is being moved without permission.
  • Temperature within the bins and fire detection
  • Alerts when a bin has been filled to user set limits. e.g 70%

Integrated netBin data within “inField Clipboard” enables:

  • Automatic scheduling of bin collections when alerts are raised
  • Route optimisation to ensure the most efficient route is taken for bin pickup based on location, traffic, time of day, priority, and vehicle requirements.

The Results

After comparing collected base line data against 6 months of using netBin technology Cornerstone Recovery has been able to significantly reduce unnecessary collections.

Considering a sample of 20 textile bins collection costs were reduced by a minimum of $84 a day which would reflect a saving of $30,726 per year for just 20 bins. The improved productivity and decreased site visits mean that this system has been a great success and is now due to expand.

Total Cost Savings on sample of 20:

  • Considering Total estimated cost savings per day = $84
  • Total estimated cost savings per year = $30,726
  • Improved Productivity – Decrease in site visits
  • Reduction in Monthly Visits: 62.0
  • Reduction in Daily Visits: 2.2

Conclusions

Based on the success of the netBin solution in the Greater Toronto area Cornerstone Recovery has now doubled the number of sensors deployed with the intention of using sensors throughout their network of textile bins in the very near future.
